Regardless of the mode of delivery, represent a guide to the relative teaching time and student effort required to successfully achieve a particular competency/module. This may include not only scheduled classes or workplace visits but also the amount of effort required to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, including any non-classroom activities.

Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

EDC040 – Perform measurements and layout tasks on construction sites
EDX060 – Prepare basic mechanical and civil engineering drawings to AS 1100

Course Description

This unit covers the competency to produce drawings required in the construction of rural roads, to the Australian Standards of AS 1100.401 and ‘AUSROADS” publications: ‘Policy for the geometrical design of Rural roads’ and ‘Guide to the design of Intersections at Grade’.

National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

EDC050 Prepare drawings required in the construction of rural roads

Element:

Calculate earthworks volumes and plot a mass haulage diagram

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Extract relevant information from design data
1.2 Calculate the earthworks volumes for the cut and fill quantities
1.3 Display the information and earthwork volumes in the form of a mass haulage diagram

Element:

Plot and tabulate information to show longitudinal section, cross sections

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Extract relevant information from design calculations and appropriate survey data
2.2 Create sectional views of a rural road with relevant set-out information tabulated on the associated views

Element:

Plot contour plans

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Extract relevant information from field and level books
3.2 Plot contour plans along a survey traverse to provide a corridor of information in accordance with survey data

Element:

Plot the horizontal and vertical alignment of a design centreline

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Determine the information required in setting out and detailing horizontal and vertical alignments of a road, which includes the incorporation of transitional horizontal curves given the relevant design data

Element:

Use appropriate symbols, terminology, linework, lettering

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Use symbols, terminology, linework and lettering correctly, in project drawings

Learning Outcomes

  • Plot contour plans
  • Use appropriate symbols, terminology, linework, lettering
  • Plot the horizontal and vertical alignment of a design centreline
  • Plot and tabulate information to show longitudinal section, cross sections
  • Calculate earthworks volumes and plot a mass haulage diagram

Details of Learning Activities

Teacher-led face to face lectures of the concepts of rural road design and drawing layouts for road networks based on industry standards including:
• Using site and contour plans
• Plotting of road alignments, longitudinal and cross sections.
• Overview of earthworks calculations
• Explanation of symbols and terms
• Appropriate scales and drawing layout.

In a computer lab using Computer Aided Drafting software and using appropriate standard symbols and terminology to AS 1100 prepare drawings of a road alignment including:
• Site and Contours plans
• Proposed plan location and alignment of road.
• Location of road furniture and associated details.
• Prepare a drawing(s) of the longitudinal section and cross sections of the road using appropriate symbols and terminology to AS 1100.
• Prepare drawings of typical road details of drive-ways, drains and culverts etc. to AS 1100.
• Prepare and tabulate earthworks quantities.

Teaching Schedule
