Details of Learning Activities

Teacher Directed:
Teacher led face to face and one-on-one instruction using overheads and notes covering the concepts of preparing structural steel design drawings to AS 1100 and AS 4100. This will cover each element in designated areas of underpinning knowledge and include:
o Interpreting data from AS 1100 & 4100
o Analysing data
o Layout and interpretation of marking plans
o Layout of steel design drawings
o Design and layout of connections
 Welded
 Bolted
o Use of finishes and protective coatings and methods of specification
o Interpreting the roles of other disciplines within the overall project.

Simulated Workplace Activities:
In a computer lab using Computer Aided Drafting software, using appropriate standard symbols and terminology to AS 1100 & 4100 the student will prepare structural steel design drawings of structural engineering parts based on industry standards and include:
o Preparing steel marking plans
o Preparing detailed steel frame layout
o Prepare a detailed beam drawing
o Prepare a detailed column drawing
o Prepare detailed connection drawings including bolting and welding.
o Specify, label and fully dimension steel connections
o Specify and label finishes and coatings

All above tasks will be incorporated in a small project based on typical workplace activities and covering all aspects of the requirements of completing a set of steel design drawings to industry standards.

Student Self Directed:
• Using the Internet students will research AS 1100 and AS 4100 from Standards Online to obtain an understanding of engineering principles, conventions and drawing practices required for preparing structural steel design drawings.
Students will be encouraged to view and analyse a variety of real-life projects (structural steel design drawings) to increase their understanding of the standard expected in a structural engineering drawing office.

Overview of Assessment

Context of assessment
This unit is most appropriately assessed in the computer laboratory using holistic assessment, based on a variety of simulated work tasks to set time frames.

Assessment Method
Assessment of this unit will involve completion of:
• A series of small assignments from within a project assessed in class and covering the basic elements of preparing structural steel drawings to industry standards (100%).

The format of the assignments and tests will employ case studies and scenarios based on typical workplace activities addressing industry standards
The industry standards applied will reflect those stated in the curriculum document under the sub-heading : ‘Critical aspects of assessment’
