Course Description

This Unit covers the skills and knowledge to assist with research and preparation of initial garment design concepts.

Learning Outcomes


At the completion of this course , students will have gained skills and knowledge to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the preparation required to develope preliminary design concepts, produce sketches manually or using cad systems.

Students will be able to demonstate knowledge of the elements and principles of design and how they are used to created good design in the fashion industry, elements of garment construction, colour and colour mix interpretation, fabric, fibres, trims, assessories and their properties and characteristics.

Students will have a good understanding of how to research, the fashion industries global and local trends.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will enable students to work in a group as well as individually. The assessed learning activities covered are:

Assessment 1 - Visual Diary - Students will prepare and develope initial garment design concepts through research, and the creation of a Visual diary capturing inspirational visual material that reflects trends of the current and forthcoming season.

Assessment 2 Self Assessment - Students will be introduced to self assessment to assist them in their learning.

Aim: The aim of this assignment is for students to prepare and develop initial garment design concepts through research, and the creation of a visual diary capturing inspirational visual material that reflect trends of the current and forthcoming season (Winter 2010 and Spring Summer 2010-11).
Total Marks: Group Assessment 90%

Presentation: A3 size Folio Sketchbook, Cut and paste, Colour, Freehand notes (no typing)

Objectives: Students are to collect sources of inspiration that may inform and contribute to product development concepts. These can be in the form of photos, postcards, catalogues, fabric swatches, magazine tears, coloured yarn and or textured materials. Sketches and notes inspired by the visual materials form part of the diary and must be included as part of the developmental process

Environmental Scanning
Value: 9 %

1. Collect magazine, newspaper, Journal, web articles which discuss current issues in the fashion industry. Group articles according to themes where applicable. Articles should cover topics such as, current retail environment, new emerging brands, eco fashion developments, sustainability in fashion. Include fashion “must haves”, and anything that is of interest to your group in regards to the current fashion environment.

Colour Observation
Value: 26 %

1. Source colour forecast projections from at least 2 relevant magazines and 3 online sources, for the current season Winter 2010 and Summer 2010 -11.
2. Include colours that are being promoted in a) cosmetics, b) accessories c) interiors d) homewares- display this in the form of collage pages using fashion magazines, catalogue images, colour sample cards, fabric swatches, accessory and trims. -a minimum of 4 pages
3. Visit at least 3 fashion stores and research current in store colour stories. Take photos, and/or make notes, use colour swatch cards to demonstrate the colour groups these stores are displaying in their fashion ranges
4. Select 3 colours that you consider to be the most prominent colours of the season, include a visual page for each colour, displaying images of how some brands are using this colour – in accessories, shoes and clothing.

Silhouettes / Trend Research
Value: 25 %

1. Analyze and display the major trends of the season. Show at least 3 different themes, Make Notes of Lifespan/editorial coverage and store representation of these key themes.
2. Observe and demonstrate the key pieces in the following categories, Pants, Dresses, Tops, Knitwear, Jackets.
3. Include 2 magazine and 2 internet silhouette forecasts for winter 2010 and summer 2010-2011

Fabrication
Value: 20 %
1. Source fabric forecast projections from at least 2 relevant magazines and 3 online sources, for the current season Winter 2010 and Summer 2010 -11. (Textile View, International Textiles, WWD)
2. Research new trends in fabrics for the current and forthcoming season
3. Include at least 4 articles on new performance textiles/fabrics
4. Include fabrics being promoted in Fashion editorials, and stores
5. Include fabrics being currently used in accessories (shoes, bags, hats, jewellery)

Graphics
Value: 10 %

1. Show graphic trends that are occurring in the current season (include men’s and women’s wear) and use images from magazines, photographs, editorials, photographs, catalogues, web images to show this, (At least 3 different theme pages will be required to demonstrate this)

Note-Individual work contributions towards your visual diary will be checked on a weekly basis prior to the end of each class,( to ensure contribution from each group member). Please have your work printed and ready for submission prior to the end of each class –as per teacher request.
