Course Description

This unit of competency specifies outcomes required to produce two and three-dimensional drawings in accordance with standard industry practice and to a level suitable for building permit approval applications. It includes the ability to read and interpret plans and specifications and to produce working drawings for commercial buildings (BCA Classes 2 to 9).

1.  Produce sketches and drawings

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Simple two and three-dimensional sketches are created using standard drawing conventions and in compliance with relevant codes and standards.

1.2 Sectional drawings of simple structural elements are created using industry standard conventions.

1.3 Essential information is recorded on drawings with symbols and abbreviations according to industry standard conventions.

2.  Read and interpret plans and specifications for a commercial building

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Relevant plans and specifications are identified to develop working drawings.

2.2 Key information is located and interpreted according to relevant Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

2.3 Advice is sought from client and other stakeholders, when required, to clarify any issues.

3.  Produce draft working drawings

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Requirements and criteria for draft working drawings are interpreted according to the scope and standard of the job being undertaken.

3.2 Draft working drawings with annotated construction details are completed in accordance with the Building Code of Australia (BCA), relevant state legislation and Australian Standards.

4.  Produce a set of working drawings

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Individual responsibilities are allocated to team members and time frame for completion of drawings is negotiated and agreed.

4.2 Working drawings are based on research and comply with relevant legislation including the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards.

4.3 Detailed specifications are included on working drawings and are completed to architectural conventions.

4.4 Working drawings are checked with team members for consistency, presentation, cross-referencing and accuracy and to ensure compliance with local government approval requirements.


Learning Outcomes


This unit of competency supports the attainment of the skills and knowledge required for building designers to produce working drawings for commercial buildings (BCA Classes 2 to 9) within the context of relevant legislation, the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards.

Overview of Assessment

This unit of competency could be assessed in the workplace or a close simulation of the workplace environment, provided that simulated or project-based assessment techniques fully replicate building design workplace conditions, materials, activities, responsibilities and procedures.  Holistic or project-based assessment with other related units is recommended.

A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must be able to provide evidence of the ability to:
     •  comply with OHS regulations applicable to workplace operations
     •  apply organisational policies and procedures, including quality assurance requirements where applicable
     •  produce two and three-dimensional drawings for commercial buildings (BCA Classes 2 to 9), including at least one orthographic, one isometric and one perspective drawing
     •  complete working drawings to the required industry standard and as determined by the project brief.
