Course Description

This unit applies to individuals who are running an organisation or who take a senior role in determining the effective functioning and success of the organisation. As such, they may oversee the work of a number of teams and other managers.

Business plans are critical tools for business growth and development. They will vary depending on the needs of the organisation. This unit covers the typical elements of a business plan and the standard approaches to be used in implementing a business plan.

The business plan should be supported by a strategic plan, and may also be supported by a marketing plan and cash flow forecasts.

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Communicate business plan to all relevant parties and ensure understanding of performance requirements and timeframes

2.4. Ensure timely reports on all key aspects of the business are available, user-friendly and balanced in terms of financial and non-financial performance
2.5. Report system failures, product failures and variances to the business plan as they occur

Learning Outcomes

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to run a business operation and covers the steps required to develop and implement a business plan.

Details of Learning Activities

A series of lectures, individual and class activities leading to the development and preparation of a business plan. A test will provide an overview of what has been learnt.

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including assignments, journals, presentation and written or test. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1

Students will be presented with in-class activities that will be assessed on either an individual or group basis. The topics will complement the lectures presented during the course.


Students will sit a 12 minute pre-plan ‘think tank’ in week 12. This session will consist of questions covering the five sub-plans that make up a completed business plan and a general question about the objective of your business plan in the operation of a small to medium sized business. This session will be a closed book exercise and cover chapters 1 through 8 from the text – ‘Writing Your Plan for Small Business Success’ - from which information to provide ‘overview’ summaries can be sought.
Each question will attract a mark out of 5 and the combined total will be the pre-plan assessment mark.
The overall objective of the pre-plan session is to ensure individual students are competent in their understanding of basic components of a business plan prior to developing their major business plan assignment.


Students will form into Teams for the major assignment. Each Team needs to find a real life company or a proposed company from which a Business Plan will be developed. The assignment will be professionally presented as a ‘Boardroom document’ to be presented to the company or the teacher covering all aspects of the proposed business plan.

Students must meet at least 3 times and provide Meeting Minutes to the teacher outlining items discussed and action agreed for preparation of joint report. Class time will be used for meetings if time permits. Student must also complete a peer review form and give it to the teacher.

More detailed assessment sheets for each assessment task will be disseminated throughout course delivery.
Submission Requirements: All assessment tasks need to be submitted via Blackboard.
You should:
• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. If your performance in the assessment is affected by unexpected circumstances, you should consider applying for Special Consideration. Information on the process and application forms is available at;ID=ls0ydfokry9rz website.
• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of work for assessment is available from the Student forms website.
