Course Description

This unit applies to individuals working in senior public relations roles who are primarily responsible for preparing and implementing a planned communications response in the event of a crisis occurring.

Learning Outcomes


This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required by public relations personnel to coordinate, develop and implement a crisis management plan to provide an organisation with a planned communications response for use in the event of crisis.


Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will cover the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required by public relations personnel to coordinate, develop and implement a crisis management plan to provide an organisation with a planned communications response for use in the event of crisis. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement. Case studies, lectures and simulation exercises will be part of the total course.

A range of  methods should be used to as learning activities such as:
• analysis of responses to case studies and scenarios
• assessment of written crisis management plans or reports of crisis management activities
• demonstration of crisis management techniques in a workplace or simulated environment
• direct questioning with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• observation of presentations in relation to crisis management planning and implementation
• oral or written questioning
• review of authenticated documents from the workplace or training environment
• review of testimony from team members, colleagues, supervisors or managers.

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including assignments, journals, presentation and written or test. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
 


Assessment Tasks


Assessment 1 (20% of total assessment)
Individual /groups
Length: Varies between 300 – 500 words
Analysis of crises supplied. Individual activities are assessed that look at the function, form and strategy of different forms of public relations
 

Assessment 2 (50% of total assessment)
In Groups
Develop recommendations to manage a crisis for a company or organisation. Group activities requiring development of strategies and creative recommendations. Report to support the recommendations.
Covers students’ knowledge, skills in project concepts and strategic thinking will be tested based on lecture notes and activities covered during the semester.

Assessment 3 Major Assignment – Report and Presentation (30% of total assessment)

More detailed assessment sheets for each assessment task will be disseminated throughout course delivery.
Submission Requirements: All assessment tasks need to be submitted via Blackboard.
You should:
• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. If your performance in the assessment is affected by unexpected circumstances, you should consider applying for Special Consideration. • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. Group Report
Length: 1500 words
Presentation: 10 minutes
