Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop keyboard skills with speed and accuracy using touch typing techniques. On successful completion of this unit, individuals must be assessed in accordance with the current version of AS 2708: 2001 and issued with a speed statement.

1. Adjust workspace, furniture and equipment to suit ergonomic requirements of the user.

2. Ensure work organisation meets organisational and occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements for computer operation.


Learning Outcomes



Details of Learning Activities

Students will complete practical exercises in class to help build their speed and accuracy whilst meeting occupational health and safety guidelines. This unit contains employability skills.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:

• direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• review of outcomes of keyboarding speed tests
• review of documents for accuracy
• demonstration of techniques.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Assessment Tasks

Element of competency, Identify and develop keyboard skills and Use safe work practices = 50 marks: Students will be given five, five-minute speed tests using TypingMaster in class as scheduled on the Teaching Schedule. Students will be observed by the assessor whilst completing tests to ensure they use safe work practices.

Element of competency, Check accuracy = 40 marks: Co-assessed with JUST5176C Prepare and produce complex legal documents. Students will be assessed on the accuracy of the portfolio documents created for this course.

Employability Skills Reflective Journal = 10 marks: Co-assessed with JUST5176C Prepare and produce complex legal documents. Students will complete a reflective journal recording their development of employability skills whilst completing both courses. Due: COB Week 16. Submit to the Assignment Box on Level 13 with a completed Assignment Cover Sheet.

If this assessment is submitted late it will attract a DNS/NYC grade. Refer to Student Diary for Special Consideration/Extension of Time procedure. If an Extension of Time is granted note that the grade given will be either NYC/CA. No numerical grade will be recorded.
