Course Description

This unit deals with the knowledge, skills, values and behaviors required to apply periodontal dressings, and to remove periodontal dressings and sutures post surgically.

Element:

1. Prepare and present surgery

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Equipment, materials and instruments required for the patient‟s treatment are gathered and arranged within the treatment cubicle
1.2 Reviewing patient‟s case notes and prepare surgery for predetermined special needs of the patient
1.3 Prepare periodontal dressings according to relevant guidelines and manufacturer‟s recommendations
1.4 Equipment and instruments are maintained according to relevant guidelines for instrument maintenance
1.5 Follow safety precautions during the preparation and presentation stages

2. Prepare and assess patient

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Patient‟s medical history and records are reviewed to confirm treatment prescriptions
2.2 An explanation of dressing application procedure is given to the patient
2.3 Adhering to the principles of informed consent, the patient is informed of possible negative outcomes resulting from any planned treatment. Consent is confirmed with the patient
2.3 The patient is provided opportunity to ask questions concerning any aspect of the application of a periodontal dressing
2.4 Patients comfort is maintained
2.5 Treatment is carried out according to occupational health, safety and welfare guidelines and infection control policy and procedures

3. Apply periodontal dressing

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Periodontal dressing material is mixed and applied to the wound surface
3.2 Periodontal dressing is evaluated to ensure that it does not extend coronal to the height of contour or interfere with occlusion and soft tissues during speech or mastication
3.3 Excess material is removed appropriately
3.4 Patient comfort is re-evaluated and clear post operative care instructions are given

4. Remove a periodontal dressing post surgically

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Patient‟s well being following surgery is confirmed
4.2 Explanation of the dressing removal is provided to the patient
4.3 The patient is provided an opportunity to ask questions concerning the removal of a periodontal dressing
4.4 The periodontal dressing is correctly removed to minimize trauma and patient discomfort                 4.5 Teeth and soft tissues are debrided
4.6 Surgical site is evaluated and any immediate concerns directed to the dentist

5. Remove sutures post surgically

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Suture removal procedure is communicated to the patient
5.2 Patient is provided an opportunity to ask questions concerning the removal of sutures
5.3 Operative site is cleansed
5.4 Number of sutures are confirmed through clinical examination and reference to patient case notes
5.5 Correct number of sutures are removed without disturbing healing
5.6 Procedure is evaluated and the dentist informed
5.7 Post operative care instructions are given to the patient

Assessment Tasks

Assessment for this course forms part of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene).
Training is mapped to the Australian Dental Council June 2011 “Professional attributes and competencies of the newly qualified dental hygienist” and the Dental Board of Australia “Scope of Practice”.
Students must abide by the 2012 “ADA Guidelines for Infection Control Second Edition”, 2010 NHMRC “Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare” and Worksafe Victoria “Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007”.
Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment such as a supervised student clinic.
Assessment is typically based around written and/or online tests, assignments, reflective journals, evidence portfolio’s, logbooks and/or practical demonstrations.
Competency based training requires the student to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken. Please refer to definition of Vocational Competency (http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=xjog855ryrtq;STATUS=A;SECTION=3;PAGE_AUTHOR=Penny%20Mercer).
Assessment is undertaken through successful completion of all assessment activities and classroom, project & industry participation. Assessment will also be undertaken replicating workplace conditions (as far as possible), and where relevant undertaken in the clinical setting. Assessments are spaced across the duration of the course, in order for your teacher to provide you with progressive feedback.
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
