Course Description

This unit deals with a moderate level of knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to provide evidence based dental hygiene therapeutic, preventive and supportive services, and educational intervention to patients with simple to moderate periodontal conditions and disorders, within the context of dental hygiene practice and conducted according to occupational health, safety and welfare policy and procedures and infection control policy and procedures.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Gather and prepare all equipment, materials and instruments reasonably expected to be required for planned procedure catering for any predetermined special needs of the patient
2.2 Follow manufacturers instructions and guidelines when preparing and using materials, equipment and instruments
2.3 Follow all necessary safety precautions during the preparation and presentation of the surgery

3.1 Take a comprehensive and systematic medical, dental and social history to collect, collate and record data by:

3.2 Collect relevant clinical data to perform a periodontal health and risk assessment
3.3 Discuss the process and rationale of data collection and recording with the patient
3.4 Preserve and maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times

4. Formulate and validate a dental hygiene diagnosis and treatment plan

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Collect, record and analyse data findings and discuss with the patient and the overseeing dental practitioner responsible for overall patient care
4.2 Formulate a dental hygiene diagnosis in communication with the supervising dental practitioner
4.3 Develop a dental hygiene treatment plan using evidence based criteria, to incorporate treatment, preventive and supportive dental hygiene interventions, that are prioritized to cater for the patient‟s periodontal and oral health needs and takes into consideration the patients own goals, values and preferences
4.4 Integrate the dental hygiene treatment plan within the overall dental treatment plan
4.5 Adhering to the principles of informed consent, the treatment options are discussed comprehensively with the patient, who is provided with the opportunity to clarify issues and is informed of possible treatment outcomes resulting from any planned treatment. Consent and acceptance of the hygiene treatment plan is confirmed with the patient

5. Implement educational interventions for the management of simple to moderate periodontal diseases and conditions

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Educate and inform the patient considering their needs, goals and treatment expectations based on evidence based criteria
5.2 Deliver educational interventions at a pace that will encourage patient understanding and ownership of their periodontal and oral health status in relation to their overall health and well-being
5.3 Provide regular opportunities for the patient to actively participate and ask questions to evaluate comprehension and promote compliance
5.4 Instruct the use of specific oral hygiene aids, and any safety precautions associated with the use of these
5.6 Evaluate and review oral health techniques and patient understanding/compliance regularly utilising a variety of evaluation methodologies as an avenue to provide specific maintenance
5.7 Design educational methodologies to encourage a sense of self responsibility for oral health based on an understanding of (their) periodontal and oral health status and personal goals
5.8 Adjust methodologies and strategies based on evaluative feedback, to meet the individual patient‟s needs and preferences

6. Implement therapeutic, preventive and supportive interventions for the management of simple to moderate periodontal conditions and disorders within the context of dental hygiene practice

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Adhering to the principles of informed consent, discuss the treatment with the patient, provide opportunity to clarify issues, inform of possible treatment outcomes resulting from any planned treatment. Consent and acceptance of the hygiene treatment plan is confirmed.
6.2 Discuss proposed therapeutic interventions and outcomes comprehensively with the patient abiding to the principles of informed consent, whilst providing an opportunity to clarify issues, and inform of possible outcomes resulting from any planned treatment
6.3 Provide selected and prioritized therapeutic interventions according to the dental hygiene treatment plan, patient expectations and relevant guidelines, to eliminate and/or control local etiologic factors
6.4 Determine the need for pain control through observation and recognition of non-verbal feedback mechanisms and discussions with the patient, and proceed with any necessary pain control requirement
6.5 Monitor treatment outcomes taking into consideration the patient‟s own goals and consequently, the effectiveness of the therapeutic interventions in the elimination and/or control of local etiologic factors
6.6 Implement alternative therapeutic interventions as indicated, if desired treatment outcomes are not being achieved
6.7 Communicate issues or concerns regarding any aspect of treatment with the supervising dental practitioner
6.8 Implement preventive strategies devised from a risk assessment and determine the need for referral to other health professionals in consultation with the supervising dental practitioner in liaison with the patient
6.9 Evaluate treatment outcomes of periodontal and oral health care and devise an evidence based maintenance program in collaboration with the patient for continuing oral and general health

Assessment Tasks

 Assessment for this course forms part of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene).
Training is mapped to the Australian Dental Council June 2011 “Professional attributes and competencies of the newly qualified dental hygienist” and the Dental Board of Australia “Scope of Practice”.
Students must abide by the 2012 “ADA Guidelines for Infection Control Second Edition”, 2010 NHMRC “Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare” and Worksafe Victoria “Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007”.
Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment such as a supervised student clinic.
Assessment is typically based around written and/or online tests, assignments, reflective journals, evidence portfolio’s, logbooks and/or practical demonstrations.
Competency based training requires the student to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken. Please refer to definition of Vocational Competency (http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=xjog855ryrtq;STATUS=A;SECTION=3;PAGE_AUTHOR=Penny%20Mercer).
Assessment is undertaken through successful completion of all assessment activities and classroom, project & industry participation. Assessment will also be undertaken replicating workplace conditions (as far as possible), and where relevant undertaken in the clinical setting. Assessments are spaced across the duration of the course, in order for your teacher to provide you with progressive feedback.
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
