Course Description

This competency unit describes the skills and knowledge required by the dental hygienist to manage individuals/groups with specials needs to improve and maintain their oral health.
It focuses on the roles and responsibilities of the dental hygienist in the dental team, with medical and allied health practitioners for the management of a patient with special dental needs within the community and/or private/public dental facilities.

Learning Outcomes

Session topics

19 Feb 1. Introduction to rural communities by DR. Martin Hall. Assignment and assessment requirements discussed. Pre Robinvale learning task and assignment issued.
Two weeks prior to Robinvale visit. 2. Task #1 due. Preparation for Robinvale visit. Learning activity
#1, investigate Robinvale community and provide a report from your findings and activity # 2 prescribed readings and completion of critical thinking questions.
The visit





Four weeks following Robinvale visit.
Each Student will be issued a negotiated date of their visit.
Clinical experiences under direct supervisor by a registered practitioner : Dentist/BOH in a dedicated remote dental clinic along with oral health promotion activities will be offered.


3. Task #2 due. Written assignment, report from visit to Robinvale and evidence of clinical treatment, clinical log sheets
 
By appointment 4. Task #3. Clinical assessment within 6 weeks after return from Robinvale via appointment

Assessment includes written tasks and an oral presentation


Assessment Tasks

There are 3 assessment tasks

1.Pre Robinvale visit prep task #1 due 2 weeks prior to going to Robinvale

2.Written report reflecting activities undertaken in Robinvale.
As part of the written report provide clinical logsheets as evidence of clinical practice.
Due 4 weeks after visit

3.Clinical assessment within 6 weeks after return via appointment

All tasks are compulsory
Note: Assignment will be marked as Satisfactory/Not satisfactory.
Clinical assessment will be undertaken against a criteria checklist issued by the teacher/assessor.
All aspects are required to be demonstrated as competent

Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment if there are minor amendments to be made and this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator.

Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in all tasks to achieve Competence for this course


Assessment Matrix

This unit is the one elective for the program
You will be required to join a 3 day visit with an outreach dental team from Richmond North Community Centre in collaboration with an aboriginal community in Robinvale Victoria

This unit deals with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to practice as a dental hygienist in a remote and/or rural community within the oral health care organisations with health promotion as a primary focus.

Dental hygiene work is to be carried out in consultation/collaboration with the dentist and other support dental staff in line with legislator and regulatory requirements

Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected.
 

  • APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK

A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original due date.

They must lodge the application form (available www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension) at least 24 hours of the scheduled time of examination http://www1.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on Level 3 of Dental Hospital.

Students requiring longer extensions must apply for SPECIAL CONSIDERATION.

  • For missed assessments such as exams- you (& your doctor if you are sick) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged online with supporting evidence prior to, or within, 48 hours.
