Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will possess the skills and knowledge for workers in the health care setting to clean and sterilise reusable instruments and equipment and to maintain associated environments. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australia and New Zealand Standards for maintaining infection control and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment.
Details of Learning Activities
On completion of this unit you will possess the skills and knowledge for workers in the health care setting to clean and sterilise reusable instruments and equipment and to maintain associated environments. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australia and New Zealand Standards for maintaining infection control and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment.
Teaching Schedule
Participate in theory sessions and workshops
Using workplace scenarios, participate in simulations/role plays/case studies dealing with processing reusable instruments procedures
Simulation:
Participate in individual/team scenarios/role plays/case studies/simulations dealing with maintenance of processing reusable instruments in the dental prosthetist workplace
Workplace:
Participate in a practical placement in a designated dental prosthetist workplace applying and maintaining process reusable instruments standards.
Maintain a current clinical logbook.

Safe work practices, standard precautions and organisation protocols for the
reprocessing and storage of reusable instruments
• Safe work practices and standard precautions when handling and disposing of sharps
including:
- transfer of sharps between operator and assistant
- reprocessing of sharp instruments
- destination of different types of sharps after use

Demonstrated clinical application as indicated in clinical logbook.
Assessment Matrix
To achieve a grade of CA (Competency Achieved) for the unit HLTIN301C/HWSS5711C Process reusable instruments and equipment in health work.
You are required to obtain a pass result of at least 50% for the Written Assessment component which is used to measure; elements, performance criteria, essential knowledge and essential skills as outlined in the health training package as required in Dental Prosthetist practice.
You are required to demonstrate practically the essential skills and performance criteria as outlined in the Health Training Package Unit HLT301C.
Failure to complete the above listed tasks/assessment will result in an NYC (not yet competent) result for unitHLTIN301C/HWSS5711C Process reusable instruments and equipment in health work. An NYC (not yet competent) result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:
Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTIN301C/HWSS5711C Process reusable instruments and equipment in health work.This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.
