Change of citizenship or residency status

If your citizenship or residency status changes after you enrol, you must notify the University as soon as possible.

Complete the Notification of change to citizenship/residency status form (PDF 44kb 2p) and submit it with your supporting evidence at RMIT Connect.

International students in Australia

If you are not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, permanent humanitarian visa holder or a New Zealand citizen, then you are a temporary resident and must pay RMIT’s international tuition fees until you have been granted permanent residency.

If you have received an offer of an international place and you have been granted a new temporary visa or permanent residency before you enrol, please notify International Services at Info Corner.

Which type of fee place will I be changed to?

If your citizenship/residency status has changed after you have enrolled, and you have informed RMIT by submitting a Notification of change to citizenship/residency status form, you may be eligible for one of the following types of places.

Higher education students

Onshore international (includes student, provisional or bridging visas)

  • Permanent resident (PR)
  • New Zealand citizen
  • Australian citizen
  • Permanent humanitarian visa (PHV)
  • A domestic full-fee place if you are enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program

or

  • Research Training Program (RTP) funded place if you are enrolled in a postgraduate research program.

Permanent resident (PR)

  • Australian citizen
  • Permanent humanitarian visa (PHV)

Your current type of fee place will not change.

If you are already enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), you must also provide a Request for Commonwealth support form (available from RMIT Connect) for each program and submit it with the Notification of change to citizenship/residency status form.

Permanent humanitarian visa (PHV)

  • Australian citizen

Your current type of fee place will not change.

If you are already enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), you must also provide a Request for Commonwealth support form (available from RMIT Connect) for each program and submit it with the Notification of change to citizenship/residency status form.

New Zealand citizen

  • Permanent resident (PR)
  • Australian Citizen

If you are already enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), you must alsoprovide a Request for Commonwealth support form (available from RMIT Connect) for each program and submit it with the Notification of change to citizenship/residency status form.

How to apply for a Commonwealth supported place

If you are granted a domestic full fee place in a higher education program and wish to be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) in the same program, you need to reapply for a CSP in that program. Your application will be considered on a competitive basis along with other applicants.

Commonwealth HELP loans

Your new citizenship/residency status may make you eligible for a Commonwealth HELP loan. If you are eligible, you must complete the relevant FEE-HELP or SA-HELP application form, including your tax file number, and submit it before your first census date if you wish to defer your fees.

Commonwealth assistance HELP application forms are available from RMIT Connect. It is recommended that you apply at the time you submit your Notification of change to citizenship/residency status form.

Vocational education (VE) and preparatory students

You must also submit an Evidence of eligibility and student declaration form (available from RMIT Connect) to determine the type of place you will be granted.

VET Student Loans

Your new citizenship/residency status may make you eligible for a VET Student Loan if you are enrolled in a diploma or an advanced diploma program.

How can I check my current status?

To check your current citizenship or residency status listed in your student record:

  • log in to myRMIT
  • select Enrolment Online
  • select My student record
  • under Personal details, select View name and demographic data.
