2016 Urban Animators Elective

“Cities need urban animators that link, weave, stir and stimulate....The urban animator has to communicate reinvented spaces and solicit participation and complicity,” Raoul Bunschoten Urban Flotsam 2001.

The 2016 Urban Animators: Living Laboratory elective will allow students to engage in a practice based, work integrated learning project which utilises the RMIT campus as a ‘living laboratory’ for testing and realising artistic concepts. It will run in parallel with RMIT’s New Academic Street capital works Public Art Program by the same name, which was launched in August 2015 and is scheduled to run through the end of 2017.

The Urban Animators: Living Laboratory Public Art Program has been designed to weave and harness the talent of RMIT into the life of the New Academic Street construction project by using its own site footprint as a canvas to nurture and present new and established creative practitioners.

The New Academic Street (NAS) project will transform the heart of the City campus and student experience by opening up the campus to the surrounding Melbourne CBD and creating better facilities for students.

The 2016 Urban Animators: Living Laboratory elective invites undergraduate students from all disciplines to enrol and will provide opportunities to work collaboratively and respond to an industry standard brief for an artistic site responsive intervention in the urban public realm. Students will receive and apply industry feedback in order to submit a concept to the NAS Project Team with a potential opportunity to be selected to have their final concept physically realised on the RMIT City Campus during the NAS construction phase. The Elective is open to students across the university.

The elective will be offered by the School of Architecture and Design and will draw on existing partnerships with the New Academic Street Project Team and associated consultants, such as builders and sub-contractors, students from the School of Art, Master of Art in Public Space to provide valuable feedback and networking opportunities for students.

The course will be co-ordinated and delivered by Grace Leone and managed by Roger Kemp (Program Manager Interior Design, School of Architecture and Design).
