Process Step/Action

Responsibility

Time Frame

Staff responsible for selecting applicants for a program must check whether the program entry requirements include VCE subject prerequisites, and any minimum scores in these.

For applicants applying through VTAC, VTAC assist in this process by testing for completion of specific VCE studies and/or study scores to assist in selection.

Staff responsible for selecting applicants to RMIT programs

Prior to selecting applicants

The following applicants must satisfy VCE prerequisites:

  • current year 12 students (regardless of whether they have an ATAR);
  • applicants whose highest qualification is year 12 (regardless of whether they have an ATAR, and regardless of the date of completion of VCE or the age of the applicant);
  • applicants who have completed additional qualifications following year 12;
  • applicants who have completed overseas year 12; and
  • Applicants who have completed non-standard year 12 (Montessori, Steiner, home-schooling).

During selection

VTAC will test the following applicants as to whether they have met pre-requisites:

  • Current year 12 students (regardless of whether they have an ATAR);
  • Applicants whose highest qualification is year 12 (regardless of whether they have an ATAR, and regardless of the date of completion of VCE or the age of the applicant); and
  • Applicants who have completed additional qualifications following year 12. Applicants in this cohort who fail prerequisites are flagged as checked. Selection staff will need to manually check these applicants

The following applicants are not tested by VTAC for prerequisites:

  • Overseas year 12; and
  • Non-standard year 12

These applicants must be manually checked by selection staff to determine whether they have met prerequisites.

During selection

The following applicants who have not completed the relevant VCE study listed as the prerequisite may nevertheless satisfy the prerequisite by demonstrating an equivalent capacity to the same standard as represented by the VCE prerequisite:

  • applicants whose highest qualification is year 12 but who completed year 12 more than 2 years ago;
  • applicants who have completed additional qualifications following year 12;
  • applicants who have completed overseas year 12; and
  • applicants who have completed non-standard year 12

The onus is on these applicants to demonstrate that they satisfy the prerequisite.

Applicants must provide evidence as to how they satisfy the prerequisite using either:

a) the VTAC Personal History form; or

b) the Apply Direct personal statement in the program application form

according to whether the applicant applies through VTAC or Apply Direct.

Staff responsible for selection to a program must consider all information presented by the applicant and determine whether the applicant has satisfied the standard represented by the VCE prerequisite. This may be demonstrated through:

  • study of a tertiary subject,
  • overseas study;
  • completion of a test; and/or
  • work experience

The ways in which applicants can satisfy the VCE prerequisites must be documented in the program selection methodology.

During selection

All applicants who are required to satisfy the VCE prerequisite must achieve the minimum study score. No relaxation of the minimum study score is permitted for any applicant, regardless of Special Entry Tertiary Access Scheme (SEAS) or Schools Network Access Program (SNAP) status.
