Qantas Winter School Internship Program
The Qantas Winter School Internship program provides students a valuable opportunity to gain skills and knowledge in the aviation industry with Qantas Airways.
Value and duration
This six month paid program provides students the opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge by contributing to real business projects within our large and complex organisation.
Throughout the time, students will:
- be assigned to a business project and play an integral part in the achievement of desired outcomes;
- participate in business unit studies to enhance overall corporate knowledge; and
- receive coaching and mentoring by senior business professionals who will expose them to a wide range of issues currently challenging the aviation and airline industry.
The 2018/2019 Qantas Engineering Winter School Program will run from Monday 30 July 2018 until Friday 1 February 2019.
Please note this year's program will be based in Sydney and as such, successful candidates from interstate will be required to make their own accommodation arrangements; however, flights will be provided by Qantas at the beginning and end and for the Christmas/New Year break.
Some of the projects
Teradata Application for Aircraft Evaluation and Weights - Ongoing development of a software application that will access Teradata for aircraft evaluation and weight & balance support. It will also be used for aircraft performance guarantees and fuel conservation initiatives. (Applicant must have good computer programing skills particularly SQL). Computer Science, Aero or Mechatronic student preferred.
Weights Engineering Application Web Based - This project is a solution towards increasing productivity and unlocking future potential for Weights Engineering. Initial prototypes have been developed (Applicant must have programing skills in Object Orientated language (preferably Java) and data bases (MySQL). Computer Science or Engineering student preferred
Industrialisation of Company Departure Procedures – Company Departure Procedures (CDP’s) are Qantas’s solution to providing Flight Crew with engine failure departure procedures. (Applicant must have strong computer programing skills). Computer Science or Aeronautical or Mechatronic student preferred
Repeat Defect Priority Management Proof of Concept – This project will deliver enhanced management of preventive defect prioritization for Airbus A330 and A380 Fleet contributing to enhanced repeat defect management process (Applicant must have good coding and excel skills)
Baselining Engine Configuration – This project will deliver enhanced airworthiness compliance outcomes as well as better visibility and management of the QantasLink Dash 8-200, Q300 and Q400 aircraft engine configuration. (Applicant must have good skills using databases including Excel). Aeronautical or Mechanical student preferred.
Integrated Engine Health Management Tool – This project will deliver enhanced engine health monitoring of the QantasLink Dash8-200 and Q300 and Q400 aircraft engine fleet (Applicant must have strong Coding Skills and databases including excel). Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering Student Preferred
Bulk Cargo Temperature Performance – This project will review bulk cargo temperature performance on the Perth London 787 Service to determine impact on transportation of temperature sensitive items in bulk cargo hold. (Applicant must have good coding skills in Python, Matlab. Experience with statistical analysis related to machine learning or big data analysis).
Maintenance Enhancement Data Analytics – Develop enhanced data analytics and reporting capability for the QE Safety Quality and Compliance team. (Applicant must have experience with data science/data analysis)
To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
- be in your third or fourth year of undergraduate studies or a Masters student in one of the following disciplines:
- Mechatronic Engineering
- Aeronautical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Computer Science

- have achieved above credit average throughout the course of your studies
- have strong programming capabilities in languages such as: Java, Python, HTML5, iOS mobile development or Matlab
- have high analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems by thinking laterally
- be a highly motivated, energetic and ambitious individual
- possess strong verbal and written communications and have the ability to liaise and present to all levels
- have a genuine interest in the airline/aviation industry.
