About the study tour

Media and communication are global industries that reward practitioners who know what it means to work in another country and its culture, and who can navigate and take the advantage of the surprising differences to be found.

This field trip takes place in the vibrant European city of Barcelona and documents some of the city’s most recent environmental and social initiatives. Barcelona is over 2000 years old and one of the most densely populated sites in Europe. During this study tour students will experience, first-hand, what it means to live and work in a major European city.

This postgraduate coursework option offers students an exciting adventure in global media and communication in order to:

  • investigate several environmental, economic and social initiatives in Barcelona to produce a diverse range of media narratives (including, for example, videos, photos, sound recordings, animations, websites, social media pages, games, apps and other communication strategies),
  • explore the idea of making environmentally and socially engaged media, which directly and positively impacts the lives of people in urban communities and the wider ecosystem,
  • lead the planning, design, production and publishing of cross-cultural projects and develop skills in cross-cultural sensitivity,
  • experience what it means to be a global practitioner and develop strategies that can kick-start your international career,
  • produce a more personal creative project.

The field trip is an option in COMM2539 International Media Collaboration, a course offered by the Master of Media. Postgraduate students from other Masters programs may be able to take the course as elective (subject to negotiation).

Tour features

  • Barcelona offers a range of wonderful cultural activities, and students will have some recreational time. On days-off the tour will incorporate some sightseeing, such as tours to see the historic quarter or the artworks of Gaudi, Miro and Picasso.
  • We are investigating accommodation in several of the student residences in central Barcelona. Rooms will probably be twin-share, with wifi, a study desk, kitchen and meeting facilities.
  • An orientation session and farewell event will be held at the beginning and the end of the tour. Both events will be held at the RMIT Europe offices.

Cost

You will be charged a $937 material fee by RMIT which will cover your accommodation in Barcelona. Airfares are individually organised. You will also need to budget for daily expenses such as food and public transport.
