RMIT Students showcase their talents at RMIT Idol

Winners of the 2013 RMIT singing competition ‘RMIT Idol’ were announced on Tuesday 24th September after the Grand Final Performance at RMIT Kaleide Theatre. Winners receive cash prizes as well as the opportunity to sing at the 2013 RMIT Graduation performance.

40 students sang off in three audition rounds throughout September in the RMIT City Campus Cafeteria, singing song of their choice in front of their peers. 16 finalists were chosen to perform at the Grand Final night where they performed their song from the Cafeteria heats as well as the Australian National Anthem, to prepare for the graduation performance.

8 students – a male and female winner as well as 6 male and female runners up – will make up a choir that go on to perform Advance Australia Fair at the RMIT Graduation at Etihad stadium in December.

Josh Bienstein and Rizky Wahyu Adriyani were selected as the overall winners of the competition, with their respective performances of Michael Buble’s ‘Just Haven’t Met You Yet’ and John Legend’s ‘Ordinary People’.

Runners up for this year were Samantha Buckley, Gabrielle Aescht, Danny Knox, Peter Fennelly, Alice Bittisnich and Kayzar Bhathawalla.

Students rose to the occasion, singing a broad range of genres from musical numbers through to folk, jazz and soul. The night was hosted by MC Yung Philly, who improvised and beatboxed with the crowd, providing entertainment while the judges deliberated. A selection of RMIT Music Collective’s jazz band provided foyer music for the crowd as they enjoyed refreshments after the show.

RMIT Link Arts & Culture congratulates all performers and wishes them all the best in their future musical pursuits.
