Matthew Sukumaran LL.B (Hons), LL.M, DBA, Barrister-at-Law

Matthew Sukumaran’s role encompasses provision of strategic advice and oversight of operations in Finance, Human Resources, Property Services, IT Services, Business Development, Marketing, External Relations, Communications and Legal and Compliance. Dr Sukumaran is a member of the President’s Executive and also Deputy General Director , RMIT Vietnam.

Dr Sukumaran holds a Bachelor's degree in law and a Masters degree in corporate and commercial law. The area of research in his professional doctoral degree focused on strategic management ofprivate higher educational institutions and global competitive advantage for Malaysian Private Higher Education Institutions. He completed his professional Bar examinations in Gray's Inn, London and was called to the High Court of England and Wales and the High Court of Malaya.

Prior to his current employment with RMIT Vietnam, which began in August 2010 (and November 2010 in his role as General Director), Dr Sukumaran spent five years at Monash University Sunway (Malaysia) Campus as Director of Administration and subsequently, Director of Academic Support and Registrar. Before joining Monash, he worked with the Australian Government as a Deputy Director in Australian Education International. During his employment with the AEI, Dr Sukumaran authored a key publication for the Australian Government titled "Offshore Accreditation of Courses in Malaysia", which continues to serve as a useful guide for Australian universities having or intending to establish an education presence in Malaysia.

Dr Sukumaran has worked in the Higher Education sector since 1993 and has held senior positions at several Malaysian higher educational institutions. These include appointments as Head of the Stamford Law School, Assistant Director of the Stamford Group, Academic Director and Registrar of Institute Putra and Chief Operating Officer of Cybernetics College of Technology. He was also appointed Visiting Fellow of Southern Cross University (SCU), NSW, and external examiner for the graduate school of management. He has also held the position of Unit Leader for Business Law on the SCU Executive MBA program and taught Conflict of Laws in University of London undergraduate law program.
