Candidature Information

Completing a research degree is something of a personal journey but there are steps along the way to ensure that students remain in track. We recognise that as your research unfolds you may need to redefine your focus and there are procedures for managing aspects of your candidature that may change over time and for submitting your thesis for examination when that time comes.

Supervisors and candidates are required to have at least two formal meetings per semester – this is in addition to the regular weekly/fortnightly meetings that are typically held.

Duration of Candidature

The duration of the program will depend on the commencement date of the student, status and program the student is enrolled in. Please refer to section 6 in the Policy and Procedures for Higher Degrees by Research webpage.

Change of Supervisor

A change of supervision arrangements may be initiated by either a supervisor or a candidate at any time. The process normally requires the parties involved to have a collaborative/ consultative discussion regarding the reasons for the change. In cases where this is not appropriate the HDR Coordinator may initiate a change of supervision arrangement and coordinate the process.

Change of Thesis Title

If a student changes their title of the thesis they may fill in a Change of Thesis Title Form. The form should be signed by the appropriate people before it is submitted to the BRO for approval.

Upgrading Information to PhD from Master by Research

When a student is considering a transfer of enrolment from one HDR program to another the guidelines and requirements must be followed. Please refer to section 3 in the Policy and Procedures for Higher Degrees by Research webpage.

Thesis Submission

Both your supervisor and the head of school must both sign the Thesis/Project submission form (DOCX, 70KB) to indicate that your thesis is ready for examination.

Some schools have internal procedures for the approval processes (such as a mandatory public presentation).

Your supervisor should manage this part of the submission process for you.

Extension of Candidature

If a student requires an extension of candidature, they must fill out the extension of candidature form and should be made at least two months prior to maximum duration. Please refer to section 7 in the Policy and Procedures for Higher Degrees by Research web page.

Recommended Panel of Examiners

The Recommended Panel of Examiners form should be completed by the senior supervisor of the research student. The form needs to be completed 6 months before the student is due to submit his/her thesis. The Head of School then needs to sign off the form and it should then be submitted to the Business Research Office for college approval and processing.
