Dr White has an extensive career history in applied textiles R&D, in business education and the management of industrial chemical and textile manufacturing companies in Australia. His academic qualifications include a BSC (Hons) UNSW in Textile Chemistry !962, MS Lowell, Mass, USA in Textile Chemistry, 1964, PhD Leeds, UK in Colour Chemistry, 1969 and an MBA, RMIT, 1985.

Key activities

Dr White’s professional career commenced in 1969 with the CSIRO Division of Textile Industry. As a Principal Research Scientist he led a number of significant applied research projects in the chemical and mechanical technology of finishing of wool, cotton (and other major fibres) fibres, fabrics and garments. In that time he authored or co-authored over 60 publications and patents.

After a year as a Senior Lecturer in The Graduate School of Management (RMIT) Dr White was invited to become the CEO of a major national industrial chemicals manufacturing company in 1987. On the sale of the company he joined Penrice Soda, Adelaide, as joint General Manager. In 1997 Dr White returned to the textile industry as General Manager Manufacturing, Bruck Textiles, Wangaratta,Vic.

In 2003, on retiring from full-time employment, Dr White was appointed Chair of the Schools Industry Advisory Group and subsequently appointed Adjunct Professor to support the Schools growing research programs. He also maintains a number of company directorships and acts as a business mentor to a wide range of emerging technology enterprises.


Dr White’s research interests and expertise lie principally in the chemical technology of fibre coloration and finishing. He also has a strong interest in environmental management issues including waste treatment and recycling.
