Study Abroad Program

What is Study Abroad Program?

Want to study overseas but the institution of choice is not one of RMIT’s exchange partners? Have your heart set on an RMIT exchange partner, however, there are no exchange places available? Why not consider a study abroad program!

The study abroad program allows you to spend a semester or a year studying overseas at the host institution of your choice. As part of the study abroad program, you will pay the host institution tuition fees upfront and will not pay RMIT tuition fees whilst abroad.

Am I eligible?

The following conditions apply to all Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Associate Degree students:

  • Have approval from your Program Coordinator
  • Meet the set requirements from your host institution
  • Have the finances available to pay your tuition upfront to your host institution
  • Remain enrolled at RMIT for the duration of your study abroad program.

Where can I study?

The benefit of a study abroad program is you are not limited in your choice for destination or institution. The study abroad Program allows you to select any institution that fits your academic needs.

Finance matters

What happens to my HECS/tuition arrangements?

Whilst undertaking study abroad, you will remain enrolled as an RMIT student, but you will not pay any fees to RMIT for the duration of your study abroad.

Study abroad students will be required to pay the host institution tuition fees upfront and will not be eligible to get this paid on HECS-HELP.

What financial assistance can RMIT offer me?

  • Global Experience Grants - For eligible study abroad grants of $1,000 are automatically awarded, so you do not need to apply. Please note that grants are not guaranteed, as we have a limited amount of funding.
  • OS-HELP - A loan scheme available for a six month study period on exchange. Your loan is added to your HELP (previously HECS) debt.
  • Centrelink - Most students who currently receive Youth Allowance or Austudy will continue to do so while studying abroad.

Refer to the Financial Assistance web page for further information on funding.
