Promotion of academic staff from Associate Lecturer to Lecturer (and equivalent research positions) procedure

Intent

To outline procedures to govern the operation of the promotion scheme for Associate Lecturer.

Scope

Associate Lecturers, internal to RMIT, including academic staff employed primarily for research, who have had 12 months continuous service at RMIT.

Eligibility

All full or part-time academic staff with 12 months continuous service at RMIT (excluding casual service and leave without pay) are eligible to apply for promotion from Associate Lecturer to Lecturer (and equivalent research positions) on attainment of qualifications and/or experience recognised by the University as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.

Applicants are required to hold a doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing.

In determining equivalent accreditation and standing, regard is had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and / or technical achievement.

Exclusions

Academic staff at Associate Lecturer level on probation are not eligible to apply for promotion.

Vocational Education teachers, Teaching only staff and Professional staff cannot be promoted to an academic position through this process.

1. Eligible level A academics can apply for promotion to their HoS/Dean by completing the promotion of academic staff level A-B form.

2. The HoS/Dean can recommend the application after sighting evidence of a completed doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. The HoS to endorse or not endorse the application no later than 10 working days after receipt of the application.

3. The relevant PVC to approve or not approve the HoS recommendation.

PVC/President (or nominee)

4. The authorised application and a certified copy of the qualification must be forwarded to Human Resources. Human Resources to advise applicant, HoS/Dean/HoC of the outcome.

Qualification/s may be certified by the HoS or a person who is authorised to witness statutory declarations.

This information will be placed on file and will action payment. Where the promotion is endorsed in the first six months of the year, the promotion will take effect from 1 July of that year; where it is endorsed in the second six months of the year, it will take effect from 1 January in the following year.

5. If the PVC(A) or HoS/Dean/HoC is of the view that the staff member does not meet the criteria for promotion, the PVC(A) or HoS/Dean/HoC will advise the applicant in writing and meet with the applicant and discuss strategies that may result in a successful application in the future.

An unsuccessful applicant may appeal the decision under the appeals procedure.

6. The applicant and HoS to meet to discuss the implications of the promotion outcome for the individual both in workload planning and career development.
