Programs for which pass with distinction or honours may be offered – 7.34.1.1

Procedure

Intent

The purpose of this procedure is to identify the course programs of RMIT for which the award 'Pass with Distinction' or 'Honours' may be granted.

Scope

This procedure applies primarily to three and four year bachelor degree programs and graduate diploma programs and makes reference to the current situation with regard to all other awards offered by the university.

Procedure

At the discretion of individual faculties, 'Pass with Distinction' may be awarded in both bachelor degree programs of three years full-time or equivalent part-time duration and graduate diploma courses.

All faculties with bachelor degree programs of four years or longer full-time or equivalent part-time duration must offer the degree with honours.

Honours awards are classified as:

  • Honours First Class 1
  • Honours 2A
  • Honours 2B

One year bachelor degree honours programs which follow from undergraduate degrees of less than four years full-time or equivalent part-time duration may be offered with the approval of Council.

Regulations approved by Council for Higher Degrees by coursework, research or publication state that the grading of awards for these course programs shall be 'Pass' or 'Fail' only.

Subject to the above policies, Faculty Board approval is required for the award of a course 'With Distinction'.

Each faculty is responsible for establishing the criteria by which 'Pass with Distinction' or Honours will be calculated. Such criteria must be approved by the Academic Board and advised to students. Current faculty criteria are:

  • Faculty of Applied Science
  • Faculty of Art, Design and Communication
  • Faculty of Biomedical and Health Sciences and Nursing
  • Faculty of Business
  • Faculty of the Constructed Environment
  • Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services
  • Faculty of Engineering

The current situation with regard to the way in which courses are offered at the University is as follows:

  • Higher Degrees
    Only unclassified awards are allowed under RMIT Regulations for higher degrees by research or coursework.
  • Bachelor Degrees of four years or greater duration
    Must be offered with Honours
  • Bachelor Degree of less than four years duration
    May not be offered with Honours. All are offered 'With Distinction' with the following exceptions:
  • Bachelor Degrees of the Faculty of Education
    One year Bachelor Degree honours programs additional to a less than four year degree
  • All students who successfully complete these programs receive an honours award, e.g. Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours).
  • Graduate Diplomas
    The award may be offered 'With Distinction' at the discretion of the Faculty Board The current situation is as follows:
    • Art, Design and Communication
      All graduate diplomas are offered 'With Distinction'
    • Applied Science
      All graduate diplomas are offered 'With Distinction' except Computing Studies, knowledge Based Systems.
    • Biomedical and Health Sciences and Nursing
      All graduate diplomas are offered 'With Distinction'
    • Business
      All graduate diplomas are offered 'With Distinction' except Health Services Management, Organisational Development Management
    • Education, Language and Community Services
      No graduate diplomas are offered 'With Distinction'.
    • Engineering
      All graduate diplomas are offered 'With Distinction'
    • The Constructed Environment
      Only graduate diplomas in the field of Social Sciences are offered 'With Distinction'.
  • Graduate Certificates
    At present Council approval has not been requested or given for these awards to be granted 'With Distinction'.
  • Associate Diplomas (Higher Education)
    At present Council approval has not been request or given for these awards to be made 'With Distinction'.
  • VET Awards
    All such awards are unclassified.
