Value of the grant
There is no prescribed funding amount for an LTIF grant. Previous funded projects have varied from $20,000 for small course-based projects to $300,000 for major institutional projects involving all Colleges. The budget must realistically reflect the amount of funds required to achieve the proposed outcomes.
Funding must be expended within the calendar year. It is expected that project planning will commence immediately after the announcement of successful proposals.
The following items will not be funded unless there are extenuating reasons:
- Equipment purchases
These items can only be included where it can be demonstrated that they are essential to the delivery of project outcomes.
Time release and salary replacement costs
All time release to undertake an LTIF project must be negotiated with the Head of School for each member of the team. Salary replacement costs can only be included in the budget where time release has been agreed with the Head of School, as evidenced by the Head of School signature on the proposal form.
Salary replacement costs should be calculated for the cost of the staff member being replaced. It cannot be higher than the actual current salary. For example, this may be an academic employed at the appropriate level required to cover duties, but not necessarily at the same level of seniority (a sessional staff member, a research assistant).
Seek the advice of your School Finance Manager in calculating replacement costs. This needs to be evidenced in the statement in the consultation section of the proposal.
RMIT University staff with direct responsibility for conducting and supporting learning and teaching activities or the equivalent in areas outside a school are invited to apply.
The project should be led by continuing staff, or staff with fixed term contracts of three years or greater where the contract date terminates beyond the proposed LTIF dates.
Sessional staff and RMIT staff working outside Australia may be included as team members but may not lead a project.
RMIT staff working outside Australia must partner with a school or college. The funding for such projects will reside within the school or college.
The Learning and Teaching Investment Fund will focus on initiatives that will support and enable RMIT University to realise its strategic objectives in learning and teaching. Within this context LTIF proposals are sought that meet the following criteria:
- address at least one strategic objective from the RMIT Strategic Plan
- demonstrate clear potential to improve student learning experiences, outcomes and employment opportunities
- be related to one of the RMIT priorities of being global, urban and connected;
- evidence a clear return on investment, by demonstrating the potential for application in areas of the university beyond their immediate context
- show how the impact of the project will be evaluated (eg. by improved data in Program Annual Reviews (PARs) or by improved Course Experience Surveys (CES);
- show how knowledge and best practice from the project will be shared and disseminated
- show that there is support by the area, School or College through the allocation of funding or resources for the proposal.
Conditions of accepting an LTIF grant
Successful applicants will be required to:
- Provide an LTIF interim report (DOC, 63 KB). This is a mid year report that provides an overview of the project purpose, design, anticipated outcomes, any unanticipated changes to design or methodology and progress and expenditure to date.
- Provide a detailed final report (DOC, 105 KB, using the evaluation framework outlined in the project proposal. Outcomes of LTIF projects will be reported to the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive and University Council.
- Meet all budget requirements or return any unused funds.
- Report directly any significant departure from the approved proposal during the project to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Disseminate outcomes of the project through, for example, publishing in reputable scholarly publications and through participation in workshops and presentations and as requested in events such as the RMIT Learning and Teaching Expo. Short podcasts for some projects may be undertaken.
- Achieve demonstrable, measurable and documented outcomes that will be reported to the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive and University Council, disseminated within RMIT and potentially the wider tertiary education community.
