Relocation instruction

Instruction statement

To facilitate the fair and efficient relocation of staff between campuses which in turn will support flexibility in RMIT’s staffing arrangements. This instruction applied to all staff employed in a continuing or fixed-term basis of at least 12 months duration.

Exclusions

  • Casual staff
  • Staff who instigate moving to a different campus through transfer, secondment, or changing position.
  • Staff moving between
    • The Melbourne city campus (including Brunswick campus).
    • Melbourne and Hamilton, East Gippsland or offshore campuses.

Instruction steps and actions

Staff who are relocated to a different campus are entitled to an allowance or other remedy as detailed below.

1. Permanent relocation

Staff who are permanently relocated and required to travel further will be entitled to either:

  • Time in lieu to cover extra travel time for the first 12 months after relocating. Any time in lieu must be taken at a time agreed between the manager and staff, or
  • An allowance paid as a once-only lump sum through payroll. This amount will be paid pro-rata for staff relocated on a part-time basis.

2. Temporary relocation

Staff who are temporarily relocated and required to travel further will be entitled to either:

  • time in lieu to cover extra travel time for the first 12 months after relocating. Any time in lieu must be taken at a time agreed between the manager and staff, or
  • payment of any additional cost of public transport for the first 12 months after relocating

3. Hardship

If staff members believe they will suffer hardship due to the proposed relocation, they can appeal to the delegated authority.

If the staff member is unable to relocate, every effort will be made to secure suitable further employment at their current location. These staff members will have access to suitable positions prior to advertisement along with redeployees. Human Resources will coordinate this process, working with the staff member and the relevant manager.
