COMM2324 Interdisciplinary Communication Project

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam

Monday 30th June - Friday 11th July (inclusive).

Second and Third year students in the School of Media and Communication who are Australian Citizens and enrolled full time have an opportunity to travel to Vietnam to work on an interdisciplinary communication project with students from RMIT Vietnam.

Each successful applicant will receive a $2000 AsiaBound Mobility Grant to contribute toward their costs. The tour is an offering of the semester 2 elective COMM2324 Interdisciplinary Communication Project (ICP) and students will complete the course alongside Vietnamese peers who are also enrolled in ICP.

Students will begin (and end) the semester early to match the Vietnam semester dates (Monday 16th June - 19th September). For the tour students will join the Vietnam students for weeks 3 and 4 of their semester (June 30-July 11).

Over fourteen days in Vietnam students will work on their projects together. There will be a number of formal and informal sessions to attend plus there are a number of cultural activities also planned. At the end of the tour students will present an update of their progress. Throughout the semester students will collaborate with Vietnam peers.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the AsiaBound Mobility Grant you must be an Australian Citizen and enrolled full time. It is open to 2nd and 3rd year students in the School of Media and Communication. A limited number of places are available. Selection is based on your responses to a short questionnaire and will take into account your progress in your undergraduate studies to date.

  • You will experience how to work across cultures on a real-world communication project.
  • You will develop strategies for creative problem solving and presentation of proposals.
  • You will get a behind the scenes look into industry and experience a range of work cultures.

Course format

Students need to be available for formal classes in Melbourne in the weeks starting 16th June and 23rd June where you will work virtually alongside your Vietnamese peers. Travel to Vietnam will occur between June 30-July 11.

Once back in Melbourne you will continue to work on the project and meet the assessment deadlines set for the Vietnam semester - including formal presentation dates. All class work will be completed by Friday 19th September.

Free time in Vietnam

There will be some free time during the tour to explore Ho Chi Minh City and surrounds (not included in cost estimate). Students may stay on in Vietnam after the end of the tour.

Cost

  • Total costs are estimated to be approximately $3000. Each student will receive $2000 grant with out of pocket costs equalling approximately $1000.
  • There is a $910 materials fee that will cover accommodation, some meals, some ground transport and some materials and is due to be paid in full by 10th June 2014.
  • Students will need to pay for their own airfares, visa costs and incidentals.
  • Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) or Full Fees (local students) will apply as per normal course enrolments.

Getting there

Students must book and pay for their own airfares to and from Vietnam.

Accommodation

RMIT will book accommodation for the group. This is included in the $910 materials fee.
