Mr Metcalf, who is a Bachelor of Fine Art – Painting student, has a large line-based abstract work on display. He uses source material from areas of popular media such as morning television, comics, coloring books, YouTube, video games and Hollywood movies.

"I am interested in situating these elements from popular media with a Fine Art context, using the source material as a springboard into Abstraction," he said.

"I seek to expand the work pictorially, borrowing conventions from the areas of illustration, calligraphy, automatic drawing and Abstract Expressionism."

Mr Metcalf said that he painted his large work onto a wall in the gallery by projecting a digitally manipulated image he created using the computer.

"If you look closely, you'll even see a distorted image of Kochy from Sunrise," he said.

"I change the projected image from three different angles, using two different colors, and find there is a lot of freedom painting on a wall, as it allows me to get involved in the physical act of painting rather than worry about the outcome, because the work is ephemeral."

Now in its ninth year, the Siemens RMIT Fine Art Scholarship Awards help RMIT Fine Art students further their careers by assisting their research and production costs.
