Linking sustainability to your discipline
Multiple opportunities exist to incorporate sustainable principles and practice into all disciplines and program areas.
It is easy to see how some disciplines and program areas relate to sustainability. For instance, the biological sciences have an ecological emphasis; design disciplines relate to notions of ‘good design’ and the product life cycle; and international development is concerned with social justice and empowering groups to act to improve community outcomes.
For other disciplines the links to sustainability may not be so obvious. It is worthwhile exploring the literature of your discipline/profession and related disciplines to see how sustainability relates to your discipline. This can be as simple as putting the search term “sustainability” or “sustainable development” along with your discipline name into Google Scholar. You may be quite surprised at the amount of sustainability related research occurring in your discipline.
Other ways to discover how sustainability may be incorporated into disciplines include:
