Spanish

Spanish is the official language of twenty three countries and the second most widely spoken language in the United States of America. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations. Acquiring Spanish language skills will enable students to pursue a range of career paths ranging from international trade and commerce, diplomatic corps and education.

The Spanish program actively encourages students to engage with the rich histories and cultures of Latin-America. Students may also have the opportunity to spend time in a Spanish speaking country for study tours or for 6-12months on cultural exchanges. Study abroad semesters may be available in Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Spain.

Student profiles

Gabrielle Oberman

Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) - Spanish language elective

‘Language learning is of utmost importance, not just for those seeking work overseas. Australian workplaces are becoming ever more diverse and the need for a cultural ‘conscience’ including linguistic skills is important in almost any workplace environment.’

Michael White

Michael White

Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) – Spanish elective

‘I chose to study at RMIT not only because the course I wanted to do (International Studies) was perfect for me, but also due to RMIT’s focus on equipping their students with both work and international experience. Almost every subject I’ve done at RMIT has included a practical side that gives students the opportunity to earn some real experience that goes beyond study. Little things like holding a Spanish food festival and encouraging us to attend and volunteer at the Spanish Film Festival can really help in building confidence with a second language.

‘A second language is such a useful thing to have not only in terms of work, but travel as well. Any way to distinguish yourself from everyone else out there going for the same job as you, is essential.

‘With RMIT it’s hard to go past the central location. Being in the city makes you feel like you’re not just studying but you’re on the cusp of getting out there into the real world.

‘RMIT offers its students countless opportunities to improve their resume and their global passport, and I know that when I finish studying and begin looking for work, my experience with a second language and studying abroad will greatly increase my employability. All thanks to my time at RMIT.’

Veronica Nunez

Veronica Nunez

Bachelor of Health Sciences – Spanish elective

‘I always wanted to study the Spanish language, and RMIT University was the most accessible as it offered a variety of levels and days in which I could choose from. I hope to work within the Health Industry, working alongside different communities and countries other than my own.

‘Learning a second language is invaluable, challenging and rewarding. Travelling overseas and having an awareness of the culture and being able to speak Spanish was empowering. You gain an appreciation and understanding of the diverse cultures that migrate to Australia and speak another language other than English.’
