Maria Stratford

Key activities

Maria currently teaches into the BA Photography and BCOMM Media programs in the School of Media and Communication. The subject areas include photography theory, documentary stills photography, radio and video production.

The courses are:

  • Processes and Cultures of Photography
  • Documentary and Editorial Practice
  • Writing Media Text
  • Broadcast Media

Maria is also Course Co-ordinator for two BA Photography courses.

Industry experience

Film experience

Maria worked in the film industry for 17 years primarily as a stills photographer and in the production area on features, documentaries, short dramas and later, produced and directed a number of documentary films.

Radio experience

Maria has been working in the community radio sector for the past ten years producing and presenting a weekly radio program. Maria has also freelanced in radio production that has been aired on ABC Radio National.

Weekly reggae music show highlighting international artists from Africa and the African Diaspora. Some of the artists Maria has interviewed are:

The Art of Change: Cultural Activism and the Role of the Arts in Social Change and Common Ground: Sacred Space (2007) ABC Radio National and Radio Australia

Abolition of the British Slave Trade (2007) Commissioned by ABC Radio National to research, produce and present a 20 mins arts program for Exhibit A. The program highlighted two Afro-Caribbean artists/ curators whose work formed part of the year-long celebrations to commemorate the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. Broadcast on Radio Australia and ABC Radio National.

SYN FM (2002) Produced and presented an African and reggae music program

Awards

  • 2011: School of Media and Communication Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement for Teaching Team
  • 1986: Won Special Mayor’s Prize at St Kilda Film Festival for Samba to Slow Fox
  • 1986: Nominated for Best Documentary by the Australian Writers’ Guild for Samba to Slow Fox
