Superannuation fund

RMIT includes superannuation as part of the employment package. The applicable superannuation fund also meets the superannuation requirements concerning minimum employer contributions.

To ensure each staff member receives their correct superannuation entitlement, there are specific eligibility rules that apply to each fund.

There are different superannuation funds available to staff depending on the type of employment, the funding sector and the actual contract of employment conditions.

With offer of appointment

Appointment of new staff

a) Superannuation information including funds product disclosure statement and forms are sent to the preferred candidate with a letter of offer.

With offer of appointment or as soon as possible after appointment acceptance

b) Membership forms are to be completed and returned to the University.

Staff member

With acceptance of appointment paperwork or as directed.

c) Details of superannuation staff member details are entered onto the Superannuation data base and payroll systems are updated, as applicable.

As information is available in accordance with fund requirements

Changing elective contribution level

Where applicable, the staff member may obtain an application form to change their superannuation contribution level from Human Resources. Once completed, return to Human Resources.

SSF members should contact ESS Super to discuss and request changes to contribution levels. ESS Super will inform Human Resources of the changes.

As information is available in accordance with fund requirements.

Remittance of superannuation

RMIT employee contributions are deducted from staff salary entitlements and paid to the appropriate funds as required.

Fortnightly, Monthly or Quarterly as required.

Secondment or fixed term transfer

A staff member’s superannuation fund membership, including contribution level, will remain unchanged during the period of a secondment or fixed term transfer except when undertaking an academic or professional staff engagement for a period of 12 months or greater and will revert to the previous arrangement when the period of secondment or fixed term transfer ends.

Additional Contributions to Superannuation

Staff members can make additional contributions to superannuation from either their pre tax salary (salary sacrifice) or after tax salary. The election to make additional contributions can be made by the staff member at any time. This request will be actioned in accordance with the legislative requirements and payroll cutoff.
