Tax time is here. What’s it all about?

It’s that time of year again. If you’ve completed some work and got paid for it, there’s a chance you might need to lodge an income tax return. Fortunately for you, the ATO is offering improved services to help you lodge your return.

Head over to the ATO’s new website, where they have made it easier for you to find what you’re looking for, and allows you to log on to online services to manage your tax and super information. They even have links to practical YouTube videos to help speed things up and reduce the burden.

The quickest and easiest way to lodge your own return is through e-tax, the ATO’s free, fast and secure online lodgement service. We’re told during last tax period 2.6 million people used e-tax.

When lodging your tax return, remember it is important to protect your identity - you only get one! Your tax file number is a unique number and is an important part of your identity. This means that you need to keep it safe. If your details are stolen, they can be used to commit fraud in your name.

Also, during tax time there is always an increase in the number of sophisticated e-mail and phone scams designed to trick people into giving away their personal details such as tax file numbers, banking and credit card details. Always remember that the ATO will never send an email requesting you to confirm, update or disclose confidential details like your name, date of birth, address, passwords, or credit card details.

With a new and easy-to-navigate website and a host of social media channels available, avoid the made dash on 31 October by lodging your tax return today.
