Pre-NAS works: Link and Library Spaces Opened

This was the first of more than 30 pre-New Academic Street projects completed across RMIT's City and Bundoora campuses in preparation for the major works. RMIT Link organises student-focused on-campus arts, community and cultural programs and events. Spacious and well-appointed, the new Level 3 space provides a light-filled and relaxing environment in which to work. Read the story.

Pre-NAS works: Library staff Space and 24-hour Computer Lab Opens

Pre-NAS Works: Building 94 Sound Studios Opened

These new School of Media and Communication sound studios in Building 94 offer students industry-standard facilities and equipment. VE Sound Production students will use the Level 1 space for audio recording, mixing, mastering and editing. Read the story. Pre-NAS works: Applied Science Teaching Labs Opened

These Building 14 labs’ were fitted-out with various physics practical experiment kits, including an x-ray analysis unit, used for performing basic X-ray diffraction experiments. Read the story. This new centre provides a cultural space for the external Indigenous community to meet and visit RMIT staff and students on Wurundjeri land. The wood panelling and wall space has been decorated with the centre’s own Indigenous artefacts and painting collection. Read the story. This purpose-built facility, located on the corner of Orr and Earl Street in Carlton, houses Mail Services, RMIT Removalists and also stores RMIT's vast collection of graduation gowns. These new Building 6 studios are for School of Media and Communication and School of Art students. The purpose-built Level 1 facility presents a technically sophisticated environment, with high-end audio equipment and increased space utilisation. Read the story. REMIT Records Chill n Grill

As part of New Academic Street's student experience program a series of Chill n Grill events were put on by REMIT Records, an RMIT Music Industry student-led organisation. Hundreds of students broke from their busy study schedules to enjoy free sets from local DJs Michael Tharratt, Manic Pixie Dream Girl and Parks Development, all of whom are RMIT students. Pre-NAS Works: AV staff Space Opens

Visual Identity Launched

The New Academic Street's visual identity was approved in June. The design reflects the strong shapes of the buildings along Swanston Street that will be renovated as part of the project. The use of architectural language and textures adds another rich layer to the concept, further strengthening its resonance with the project and the University's demographics.

Pre-NAS Works: TV Studios Opened

Housing two studios, two control rooms, prop-store and green room as well as a technician room, this new space has been designed to an industry-standard. Read the story. Theatre Stack Transformation Begins

Four-levels of new study spaces will be built in Building 10. Once completed in February 2016, it will be one of the first major projects the New Academic Street delivers. 330 new student study spaces will overlook Bowen Street and provide a relaxed and connected student centric area.

Safety Week Kicks Off

As part of the New Academic Street student experience program, Safety Week was held at the beginning of Semester 2 to raise students’ awareness about safety on campus, in the city and at home.

Occulus Rift at RMIT Open Day

During Open Day, prospective students were taken on a virtual tour of the New Academic Street project using the Occulus Rift. The technology allows users to experience the City campus as it will appear once the construction project is completed.

Staff Pre-construction Briefings

Three sessions were held in the Preconstruction Briefing Series, offering more than 140 staff information about how students will be impacted and who they can contact if they have any queries or concerns related to the project. FAQs from these sessions have been added to the New Academic Street website.

Occulus Rift Opens New Academic Street Unleashed Week

New Academic Street ambassadors guided hundreds of staff and students as they experienced the project using the Occulus Rift virtual reality software. The Occulus Rift features scenes, including laneways, hallways, student and retail spaces, as they will appear once the project is complete.

New Academic Street Unleashed Week

New Academic Street Unleashed was a 10-day program of events and activities designed to launch the project to students and staff. Marking the start of construction works, the Unleashed program of events included pre-construction briefing sessions, design and construction career lectures, parties, the public art program's launch, a projection festival and the roll out of virtual reality technology, Occulus Rift, and much more. The Urban Animators: Living Laboratory allows RMIT’s globally-renowned creative community to transform and enliven the City campus during the two-year public art program. The first public art projection screening kicked off with a launch party.

Career Deconstruction Series: Environmental and Sustainable Design

More than 100 students attended the first lecture in the Career Deconstruction Series. Nick Bamford, Principal Mechanical Engineer at AECOM and Mechanical lead engineer on the RMIT NAS and Michael Li, Senior ESD Engineer and ESD lead on the RMIT NAS, presented to students about their involvement in the project. Public Art Program Makes a Splash

Melbournians love their art and the New Academic Street projection initiative, which formed part of the Urban Animators program, was no exception.

Interviews with Paul Gough and Urban Animators' curator Grace Leone were broadcast on 2XX 98.3 and 774 ABC Breakfast with Red Symons. And stories about the week-long Swanston Street projections appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and Broadsheet.

Bundoora Student Tour

To orientate engineering students with the new Light and Heavy Structures labs at the Bundoora campus, a welcome lunch and tour was organised with approximately 35 students and staff attending. Professor Sujeeva Setunge and Mr Pavel Ryjkov guided the students through the new spaces to showcase the available facilities.

Design Market Wows City Shoppers

When it opens in mid-2017, the New Academic Street's food, beverage and retail area will accommodate innovative and flexible pop-up retail spaces available for students’ use. The Pop Up Retail Testing Grounds provide entrepreneurial students and recent alumni with an opportunity to test their products in a commercial marketplace. In August, the New Academic Street team coordinated the first in a series of Design Market's at Melbourne Central. Read the story.

Furniture Recycling: Take a Chair Day

More than 100 chairs and office drawers were in need of a new home due to the Library Transformation. RMIT students were happy to help and take them off the University's hands. All other wastage generated by New Academic Street demolitions is sent to a facility where it is separated and recycled. Humanity for Habitat collects remaining furniture for reuse in community projects.

RMIT Connect Opens

RMIT Connect will transform the student experience by introducing new technology to reduce queues and co-locating various student services. The temporary space opened in the fully refurbished former café space in Building 8, Level 4.

Opening along with the new temporary RMIT Connect space, Stage 1 of the Swanston Library Transformation includes refurbished desk spaces and additional tech facilities such as USB ports.

Stage 2 Construction Starts, Major Hoarding Goes up

In what signified a big step in the project, the construction zone was extended and hoarding went up in Buildings 10 and 12, Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7. The Hub and a number of student services also closed and moved to Building 8, Level 4. Works began on the new Student Hall, which will house RMIT Connect permanently, as well as the new Library, laneways, terraces and retail spaces.

Safety Video Launched

The New Academic Street project may cause temporary impacts to staff and students at RMIT’s City campus. This video was launched to step affected parties through the reality of how noise, dust, fumes or vibrations might affect them and how this will be managed during the life of the two-year project.

Bowen Street Traffic Management

Barricades were erected down the centre of Bowen Street between La Trobe and Franklin Streets. This has created a safe passage for pedestrians while traffic increases during the project construction stage. The traffic management plan was installed to ensure the campus remains safe for RMIT's staff, students and visitors during the project.

As part of a Work Integrated Learning project and in collaboration with the New Academic Street project, RMIT second year advertising students developed a student safety campaign called Don’t let uni be the death of you. It was uploaded to RMIT’s Facebook page and has since had more than 46,000 views, 1000 likes and 230 shares.

Sneak peek: Building 10 Theatre Stack progress

A look behind the hoarding in Building 10, Level 13. Following the theatre stack's transformation, due for completion in early 2016, students will enjoy a stunning view over the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens.
