Course Description
This course introduces the students to basic techniques for measurment and estimating the cost of construction.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On completion of this course, students will be able to measure and prepare an estimate for a number of selected trades for domestic construction.
This will include an understanding of builder’s measurements, labour constants and costings, material and plant.
It will also continue the formal theory and practice of Quantity Surveying applied to similar projects.
At the end of the subject the student should:
• Have an understanding of the relationship between the various parties involved in the building procurement process;
• Know how to apply role Australian Standard Method of Measurement to simple buildings
• Understand the role of cost management of building works
• Understand how to price measured building work items
• Understand the theory and practice of competitive tendering
Overview of Learning Activities
The format will be a combination of lectures and tutorial work as appropriate and some of the tutorial exercises will be marked. The assignment will be based on the measurement of a simple building.

Overview of Assessment
For any designated module in a course you must achieve:
• 50% overall,
• at least 40% in assessment allocated to examinations
If you fail a module, designated by the course guide, you will be deemed to have failed the whole course and will have to repeat it.
