BUIL1122 Measurement and Estimating


Course Description

The course will provide an extension of the knowledge and skills gained in estimating and measurement (BUIL1122).  The students will put into practice, knowledge acquired and developed during the course of their studies. The course will apply the major measurement and estimating software commonly used in the industry.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The overall objective of this course is to extend your ability to measurement and estimating using software applications.


Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Build and operate basic Building Information Models (BIM) and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings;
  • Differentiate the differences between BIM/CAD quantities and ASMM (Australian Standard Method of Measurement) quantities;
  • Use the BIM models/CAD drawings for producing accurate bills of quantities and estimates using CostX and BuildSoft;
  • Present your measurement and estimates using the style and conventions of the quantity surveying profession.


Overview of Learning Activities

The lectures will discuss the state-of-the-art software applications in measurement and estimating using case studies. The workshops will provide you with hands-on opportunities to use the software, gain the essential skills and complete the assessment tasks. You are encouraged to download the software to your own laptop and bring it to the workshops. Alternatively, you may use one of the School’s laptops which will be available during the workshops.

For any designated module in a course you must achieve:

• at least 40% in the assessment allocated to assignment work, or class tests. 

If you fail a module designated by the course guide, you will be deemed to have failed the whole course and will have to repeat it.
