Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

BUIL1142 (BUIL1144)Cost Planning & Tendering which comprises; knowing how to apply the standard cost planning and forecasting techniques to simple buildings. Understand the role of the cost planning & analysis as a means of managing the design process. Understand the differences between cost management and modelling of building structures, and civil engineering structures. Understand the role of tendering.


Course Description

This course aims to expand upon and apply the concepts of cost management introduced in the pre-requisite course.
Specifically, this course will comprise:

• Theoretical applications of cost management to buildings

• The opportunity to investigate the economics of the building industry

• Introduce building value concepts and their use in industry

• Enable students to investigate the use of various cost management approaches to the construction of the built environment.

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. recognise the capital and life cycle costs issues in a complex environment;
  2. apply various cost management philosophies,
  3. investigate the economic impact of cost on the built environment.

Face-to face lectures provide the key concepts for this course. Hands-on examples will be provided. Practical tasks will enhance students’ engagement in the workshops.
