Course Description

This course introduces students to the technological issues associated with planning, developing, implementing and managing an eBusiness solution within an organization.

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onward your class will be held in a device-equipped teaching space. Each student group will have access to a laptop. It is however recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus both in and outside class times.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will become knowledgeable in the technological infrastructure issues associated planning, developing, implementing and managing an eBusiness solution within an organisation. This course demands that students be innovative thinkers and problem solvers. The assignments call for students to display their creative and entrepreneurial skills in developing solutions that add value to a business enterprise in the volatile web marketplace, and they develop the students understanding of the technology involved in such solutions.
Students will develop an understanding of technological developments that drive eCommerce, as well as the paradigms for business use of eCommerce.
The world of business demands that one have a socio-economic awareness, a sense of personal integrity and to display ethical behavior. Students in this subject investigate issues of privacy and computer security such as control and data protection on the Internet and the role of government.
 

Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:
• Understand how organizations (governments and businesses) are using technology as a strategic resource for eCommerce.
• Develop a high level understanding of relevant technologies for eCommerce.
• Understand the key issues associated with current technologies including the Internet, bandwidth, security, equality of access, legal and privacy issues, impact on jobs.
• Develop an appreciation of the breadth of technological infrastructure issues when planning, developing and implementing an eBusiness solution.
• Appreciate the innovations and opportunities offered by emerging technologies and the growth of the Internet.
 

Overview of Learning Activities

The focus of this course is on actively engaging participants in the learning process. The more active and involved students are, the more they will gain from the course. Individuals are encouraged to research an emerging eBusiness technological issue of relevance and interest to them. Students will receive hands-on experience with the development of eCommerce solutions.
