Course Description
To introduce students to the design and deployment of local and wide area networks that support the applications server model. and Active Directory Services.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon completion of this subject, successful students will be able to:Execute the processes involved in the design stages of the deployment of a local area network that will support application serving.
Appreciate the management issues facing administrators of LANs and WANs.
Install and configure hardware and software on to clients and servers so as to create a secure network.
Basic problem solving and trouble-shooting tasks associated with the use of networks.
Administer a small LAN and gain experience in using typical LAN administration software.
To introduce students to World Wide Web services installation and management.
To understand the use of Microsoft Active Directory Services as implemented in Microsoft Server 2003.
Successful students will be able to design, install, deploy and manage an Active Directory based network using the Microsoft Server 2003 network operating system. In addition, students will be capable of detailed troubleshooting, able to manage IIS and Exchange Server.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course offers a series of lectures and laboratory based tutorials. The tutorials (or lab sessions) require students to develop extensive skills in the use, manipulation and configuration of a PC as a server under the Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Furthermore, many of the theoretical concepts covered in lectures will be demonstrated and developed under safe and supervised laboratory conditions. Networking abilities and skill will likewise be developed within the safety of a protected network laboratory.
Overview of Learning Resources
The University will lend students free of charge a removable hard disk assembly for their exclusive use during this subject. It is a small capacity SATA hard disk in a removable caddy assembly. This can be used either in the exclusive University laboratory (108.8.12) or at home if the student elects to install compatible hardware.
Overview of Assessment
The assessment for this subject is on the basis of the satisfactory completion of a set of practical assignments and passing an end of semester written examination.

To pass this subject, students must gain a pass in each component of the assessment. All material covered in lectures and workshop sessions will be examinable. A failure in either component of the assessment will result in a “ fail” in this subject. Where practical assignments are set, students are advised that they will be required to personally demonstrate their work to the lecturer, and it is strongly recommended that submitted work be thoroughly understood
