Course Description

The course provides students with a detailed understanding of the types of equipment that form a digital network and their operation. The course includes details about types of networks and the equipment that is used on each network type. The course focuses on the design and operation of customer premise networks. Customer premise networks are wireline and wireless networks designed to be private single or multi-layered networks that facilitate the operation of internal and external services and applications.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course objectives are to provide the student with knowledge of network infrastructure and an understanding of the different types of network equipment and the operation of equipment found in customer premises.
The course learning outcomes include an understanding of network infrastructure and the equipment found on digital networks. An understanding of the equipment types is obtained through identification of network types, their use and the equipment needed to operate each network type.
Student learning is focused by considering customer premise networks in detail and the operation of wireline and wireless networks in single and multi-layered networks in customer premises.
Student capability development will include an understanding of the setup and operation of networking interfaces of common customer premise equipment found on wireline and wireless networks. Students will be provided with knowledge of the operation of common gateways, firewalls and routers found in customer premises.

Overview of Learning Activities

Laboratory sessions will involve extensive configuration and interaction with customer premises equipment which is part of the network infrastructure..
