Course Description
This course will introduce you to design drawing as a thinking and communication tool.
You will learn the design-drawing method of rapid visualisation to enable you to generate, reflect on, analyse and develop ideas and concepts.
You will learn to use and apply form, shadow, line weight and freehand perspective to visualise and communicate objects, ideas, processes and systems for engineering, science, business and design.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This is a university elective.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Apply design-drawing skills to visualise, explore and communicate ideas, processes, concepts and objects.
- Synthesise and apply appropriate drawing techniques towards an intended outcome.
- Demonstrate a proficiency in the use of drawing skills: form, perspective, line weight and shadow.
- Use drawing techniques appropriate toward you disciplinary focus.
- Analyse, reflect on and critique your own work and that of your peers.
Overview of Learning Activities
During this course you will participate in tutorial demonstrations and a range of practical learning activities, drawing workshops and documenting processes to explore and develop your design drawing skills within a drawing studio environment.
You will undertake a set of projects that will guide you through the design drawing process and enable you to develop specific capabilities. Your lecturer will help you tailor each of your projects to suit your capabilities and disciplinary focus.
You will contribute to class critiques and receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and your peers through a variety of consultations, presentations and tutorials. This feedback will help you track your learning against the specified learning outcomes for this course.

A selected range of supplies are available, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online and hardcopy resources through RMIT University Library.

Assessment will cover both practical and theoretical aspects of your learning. Project work will allow you to focus your learning toward your capabilities and disciplinary specialisation.
