Course Description

This course offers an overview of key simulation technologies and emerging areas of simulation technology. It is designed to provide students with a basic level of understanding as to how the various technologies are integrated to form a simulation system.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Capabilities

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Identify the primary simulation technologies in current use and to discuss the chief applications of each
• analyse and compare the operation of the various components of a simulation system including visual, aural and haptic systems.
• assess the application of simulation technology to training.

Students will gain or improve capabilities in:
• Theoretical knowledge hardware and software systems for simulation and games.
Communication and working in teams: student capabilities will be improved through the presentation of written and verbal reports, and group work in projects and reports.



Overview of Learning Activities

Introduction to current and emerging simulation technologies, distributed simulation, simulation interoperability
Overview of simulation technologies methodologies;
Control device interfacing;
Visual simulation
Aural simulation including 3D sound techniques
Haptic feedback systems
Computational and supporting technologies
Simulation system architecture, hardware, software and data networks;
Low-cost simulation techniques

Overview of Assessment

There are three components to the assessment
1. Spatial Audio project and presentation (in small groups)
2. Technology Presentation and report (in small groups)
3. Individual take-home exam.
