Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There are no pre-requisite courses or assumed knowledge and capabilities for this course.

Course Description

This course introduces a conceptual framework for analysing current debates about land and resource management in rural areas. This is achieved by firstly exploring the many dimensions of sustainable development and its application to resource management. Pressures on land and resources, their current state, land use change, and policy responses will be examined. Issues such as property rights, stakeholders, policy, legislation, community approaches to resource management and indigenous land management will be covered over the semester. A major case study of the Murray Darling Basin will be used to draw together historical, political, economic and environmental perspectives on natural resource management. Other examples will be drawn from local, national and international case studies.
