Course Description

You will examine a broad range of assessment concepts in adult and vocational education in this course. You will have the opportunity to plan, critique and improve assessment procedures and processes for a range of contexts.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Appraise the purposes and practices of assessment in adult and vocational education
  • critique the principles of assessment in adult and vocational education
  • Modify and implement types and methods of assessment appropriate to the assessment context and the candidate profile
  • Design and critique assessment strategies and tools for a range of contexts
  • Critically reflect and actively engage in contemporary discussions about assessment in adult and vocational education


Your learning in this course is focussed on the development of the following program learning outcomes:

  • Analyse professional practice in a range of educational, commercial and community settings with a view to applying strategies for improvement
  • Synthesize, interpret and integrate, at a high level, knowledge and information derived from multiple sources and perspectives, and apply this knowledge in creative problem solving
  • Critically reflect and evaluate on experiences of personal and professional practices to demonstrate autonomy, good judgment and an orientation towards life-long learning

The course takes a problem-based approach to learning. You will engage in a variety of learning activities including participating in face-to-face and online activities; group work; presentations, discussions about articles, case studies and research reports.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. A range of assessment tasks are used and may include written assignments, active participation in face-to-face and online activities, case studies, presentations, reports, or a negotiated alternative task. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
