Course Description

The aim of the course is to introduce you to the ways media outlets organize their coverage of society in rounds and to consider the implications of this practice. You will gain an insight into reporting various rounds such as politics, international news, economics, sport and bit of entertainment. You will also be introduced to the techniques of feature writing, commentaries, news analysis and what is called “explanatory journalism.”


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities

Demonstrate the cognitive, research, analytical, critical thinking, communication and presentation skills required for undergraduate study and professional practice
Be able to apply the ethics and regulations which govern modern media and communication practice
The ability to recognize news and to apply critical thinking, analytical skills and ethical practice in the gathering and presentation of news within the context of the professional requirements and demands of the multimedia newsroom.
The professional skills to work in a converged, multimedia newsroom and the ability to adapt to future changes in newsroom practice
 


In this course you will dvelop the following course learning outcomes:

  • develop feature and feature-style writing techniques 
  • consolidate interviewing skills
  • apply these skills to specific rounds
  • know the basics of reporting a round and how it fits within the overall organisational structure
  • further develop hard news writing skills in the context of rounds reporting
  • broad knowledge of news and current affairs


Overview of Learning Activities

During tutorials you will engage in writing and fact-finding exercises as well as discussing the key concepts underpinning rounds reporting and feature writing. 
You will find it difficult to grasp the necessary concepts if you do not attend lectures and tutorials.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
There is no prescribed text for this course. Readings will be taken from text books prescribed in previous journalism courses and students will also be expected to read/watch/listen to a wide variety of print, radio and television news.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. Assessment for this course includes news quizzes, news and feature writing assignments.
