Course Description

You will be introduced to the study of fibres and spinning methods and associated processes.

Fibres
You will study fibre structures and properties (natural and man-made), with an emphasis on their methods of production, properties and end uses.

Spinning
You will study spinning methods and associated processes involved in converting various fibres to the types of yarn required for fabric production or other end uses.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

1. Problem solve effectively in a fashion and textiles enterprise.

2. Apply analytical decision making techniques in a fashion and textiles environment.

3. Problem solve and apply sustainable practises related to fashion and textiles issues.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

- Compare and contrast the distinguishing features of a range of fibres and their end uses.

- Identify methods of production of major textile fibres

- Compare and contrast the distinguishing features of the major yarn manufacturing systems.

- Summarise the basic concepts of each stage of manufacturer of cotton spun yarns and identifying the relationship between stages of manufacture.

- Summarise the basic concepts of each stage of manufacture of worsted, semi worsted and woollen spun yarn and identify the relationship between stages of manufacture.

- Summarise the basic concepts of each stage of manufacture of a range of alternative spinning systems.

- Explain the rationale for fibre and yarn testing and the parameters within which this testing takes place.

- Execute a range of tests and test results relevant to yarn manufacture.

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will learn via a combination of lectures and tutorials (to provide an understanding of the theoretical principles and concepts) and practical / laboratory classes.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with the resources and tools for learning in this course through our on line systems.

This will include lecture notes, manuals, reference mists, library resources and equipment laboratories.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include examination, assignments and/or practical work. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Director or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

An assessment charter summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teachers.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies and procedures.
