Special Initiative subjects are elective subjects. A student initially undertakes Special initiative A, then if need be they then enrol in Special Initiative B and then C in turn.

The project is supervised by one staff member and assesssed by at least that staff member and the program director, or another staff member if the supervisor is the program director.

Overview of Learning Activities

The subject will be largely self-directed, with minimal supervision by staff. Students will be expected to sign a Learning Contract outlining what project they will undertake in the semester and on what basis it will be evaluated. This project may be instigated by writing a proposal and submitting it to the program director. The proposal may be written by one or more staff members and / or one or more students. The project may involve any number of students and staff. If available a staff member is assigned the role as supervisor for each project. Once accepted the agreed upon project is carried through to completion, when it will be assessed by the Program Director and the relevant staff members at a 15 minute presentation. Where convenient all Special Initiative students will be asked to present together, and to as many other staff, students and others as possible, for the greater educational benefit of the course.
