Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completed undergraduate degree in Mathematics/Statistics and Operations Research with a major in at least one of the areas of Statistics, Operations Research, Numerical Analysis, Pure and Applied mathematics or its equivalent. A creditable academic record.

Course Description

Several areas of Numerical Analysis are studied in depth, extending the material covered in the undergraduate program. The course will consist of lectures, supervised reading and supervised investigations.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course provides an introduction to the theoretical basis and methods of implementation of numerical procedures for the solving of a variety of mathematical problems. Issues such as accuracy, convergence, stability and computational efficiency are discussed.

You will develop techniques to implement numerical procedures to solve a variety of mathematical problems.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will attend lectures when the underlying theory will be presented. Where appropriate, you will be given instructions on software packages in the computer laboratory.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be notified of suitable references in lectures.

Overview of Assessment

Each component will be assessed through assignment/project work and an examination.
