Course Description

This course is designed to further develop students understanding of the historical, conceptual and practical aspects of photography as it relates to the making of fine art images.

Capability Development

Upon completion of this course you will have developed the capabilities to address conceptual, perceptual, formal and aesthetic concerns of the fine art photographic image in a contemporary context.  You will also develop your artistic production capabilities by critically reflecting on your own work and the work of other practitioners.

Learning Outcomes
1. Refine connections between image conceptualisation, visualization and photographic imaging strategies.
2. Further develop an understanding of the photographic image as a work of art, referencing both contemporary and historical artists.
3. Further develop an understanding of photographic imaging technology and practices, including camera controls, exposure, lighting and composition in application to digital and analogue capture.
4. Further develop an understanding of digital imaging concepts and practices, including extended processes and functions such as scanning and printing.
5. Develop a sophisticated knowledge of the functions and operations of Adobe Photoshop CS3. 
6. Further investigate the cultural foundations of digital image making..

Overview of Learning Activities

This course is designed to introduce students to the historical, conceptual and technical aspects of photographic image making.  Foundation concepts will be considered in relation to contemporary production methods and equipment.  The emphasis is on students developing a range of skills to enable them to work within the Fine Art Photography studio and in the field working with Film and Digital equipment.  

Overview of Learning Resources

Students have access to advanced digital imaging production facilities.  Resources include Apple Mac G5 MacPro computers with Apple 30” Displays and Eizo Calibrated screens. All machines run Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended™ and complimentary software.  State of the art scanners and late model digital cameras, as well as large and medium format analogue cameras, are available for use.  Output facilities include Epson 2400  and Epson R2800 Printers.  All production facilities for this course are digital.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is conducted through a class project and a series of reviews.   The class project assesses a student’s progress in relation to specific material presented in the class.   
Reviews are linked to the Fine Art Photography studio area, and provide students with the opportunity to publicly present their work for critical discussion and feedback.  Reviews are conducted collectively within the studio area, and whilst students are only expected to exhibit for one review per session, all students are encouraged to attend as many sessions as they can, as each review will be unique.
