Course Description
The course studies the language of narrative for the moving image. Particular emphasis is placed on the generation and development of personal ideas to articulate and fulfill the narrative content. Students are instructed in all stages of screen narrative form and structure – from shot, scene and sequence deconstruction – to scriptwriting, camera, lighting, mise-en-scene, and editing analysis.
Exercises explore conventions and strategies for sequencing images and are integrated with group analysis of historical examples and student work. All exercises will be contextualised within the framework of spatiotemporal ‘continuity’ as the dominant narrative idiom against which innovations and variations are defined.
