Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Solid Mechanics and Materials 1 or equivalent
Course Description
This course deals with analytical techniques for the solution of linear elastic stress and strain problems, including displacement of beams and analysis of simple indeterminately supported structures
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will advance the students’ development of the following broad capabilities:
Ability to apply knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals
Ability to communicate effectively, not only with engineers but also with the community at large
In-depth technical competence in at least one engineering discipline
Ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution
Ability to function effectively as an individual and in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, with the capacity to be a leader or manager as well as an effective team member
Understanding of and commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities
Expectation and capacity to undertake lifelong learning
Ability to use appropriate techniques and resources
Ability to manage information and documentation
Ability to demonstrate professional attitudes
The general educational aim of this subject is to reinforce students’ knowledge of statics and to expand this knowledge in the areas of linear stress and strain analysis, thus enabling them to deal with more complex and integrated engineering problems involving solid mechanics.
In particular, students will be encouraged and facilitated to engage in independent learning and problem solving at their own pace.
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Evaluate displacements of the structures of simple forms of loading.
- Solve simple statically indeterminate structures.
- Perform theoretical and experimental strain analysis using strain gauges.
- Evaluate stress due to bending in unsymmetrical cross-sections.
- Evaluate shear stress due to shear forces.
- Calculate reduced stress and evaluate the strength of the structure
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities for this course include studying the learning package, face-to-face tutorials, and laboratory experiments (during residential visits). The basic theoretical background will be explained in the learning package and various real-world engineering problems will be discussed and analysed in the tutorials and pre exam workshops. The basic principles will also be demonstrated through the laboratory experiments.
